According to the UHV project construction plan revealed by the State Grid Corporation on the same day, by 2015, the “Three Huas” (North, East and Central China) UHV power grid will be built, forming a “three vertical, three horizontal and one ring network”, and 11 UHV direct current transmission projects will be completed. According to the plan, UHV investment will reach 270 billion yuan in the next five years, analysts said.
A number of international leading technical standards
On January 6, 2009, 1000 kV Jindong-Nanyang Jingmen UHV AC test demonstration project was put into commercial operation. This project is the highest voltage level in the world, the most advanced technical level and the communication power transmission project with complete independent intellectual property rights. It is also the start project and the first ultra-high voltage transmission project built and put into operation in our country.
According to the relevant person in charge of the State Grid Corporation, 90% of the equipment of the project is domestically produced, which means that China has fully mastered the core technology of UHV AC transmission and has the capacity of mass production of UHV AC equipment.
In addition, through this project practice, State Grid Corporation has researched and proposed the UHV AC transmission technology standard system consisting of 77 standards in 7 categories for the first time in the world. One national standard has been revised, 15 national standards and 73 enterprise standards have been issued, and 431 patents have been accepted (237 have been authorized). China has established the international leading position in the fields of UHV transmission technology research, equipment manufacturing, engineering design, construction and operation.
One and a half years after the successful operation of the UHV AC transmission demonstration project, the Xiangjiaba-Shanghai ±800 kV UHV DC transmission demonstration project was put into operation on July 8 this year. So far, our country begins to enter the hybrid era of ultra-high voltage AC and DC, and the preparation work for the construction of ultra-high voltage grid is all ready.
“Three vertical, three horizontal and one ring network” will be realized.

Under the plan, UHV investment will reach 270 billion yuan in the next five years, analysts said. This is a 13-fold increase over the 20 billion yuan invested during the 11th Five-Year Plan period. The 12th Five-Year Plan period will become the important phase of China’s UHV power grid development.
Strong transmission capacity to build a strong smart grid

It is estimated that by 2020, the western coal power base plans to send 234 million kW of coal power to the central and eastern regions, of which 197 million kW will be sent through the UHV AC-DC grid. The coal power of Shanxi and northern Shaanxi is delivered through UHV AC, the coal power of Mengxi, Ximeng and Ningdong is delivered through UHV AC-DC hybrid, and the coal power of Xinjiang and Eastern Mongolia is delivered directly to the power grid of “North China, East China and Central China” through UHV.
In addition to traditional coal power, UHV will also undertake the task of hydropower transmission. At the same time, wind power is transmitted through the external transmission channel of the coal power base and transmitted to the “Sanhua” power grid by means of wind and fire bundling, which can realize the absorption of wind power in a wider range in the west and promote the large-scale development and utilization of wind power and other renewable energy.
